Letters to Zach

Preparing for Your First U2 Show On June 18th we are going to see U2 as a family!

Dad · Jun 18, 2018 ·

Dear Jami and Zach,

Tomorrow night Mom and Dad are taking you to Washington DC for your very first rock concert… and it’s U2! The new album, Songs of Experience is so full of hope and both of you know every song by heart, how could I not take you?

To make sure that your first show is something that you can try and understand as much as you can I’ve printed out a program just for you. Dad is a crazy U2 nut fan and he doesn’t like knowing the set list ahead of time, but for you I’ve put crazy on hold and given you a map of the night so you can follow along.  Even places where you might want to take potty breaks.

It’s so important to be out in the world with your eyes wide open. Looking for truth. U2 is a rare band. One of a kind. They all love Jesus and they as asking us to follow them on a journey towards truth and making this world the best place it can be for all people.

I hope the night goes well. I hope you get to scream as loud as you want. I hope you don’t fight me on keeping your ears protected the whole night.  I am beside myself with joy!

Love Dad

Grace & Truth: A Total Mystery To Me

Dad · Jul 13, 2015 ·

Dear Jami and Zach,

Let me tell you a mystery I’ll never fully understand.  It’s an important mystery.

We need Truth
Like it or not, we are all looking for Truth. I believe we all have a longing to know what is True in this life and what isn’t. I think every honest person has a sense that they are broken and we are searching for answers or “Truths”. It’s like there is something inside of us that knows something is off; but who can tell us what “right” is?  I understand we all have “truths” in life that are unique to who we are and our own experiences.  But what about “Truths” with a capital T that are true for everyone? How many of those are there and who can tell us what they are? It seems our culture doesn’t like this topic, but our longing for it is clear.  When we see injustice.  When we see something wrong and want the world to change.  Or when we see something beautiful and we want the whole world to see it.  The X-Files were right, “The Truth is out there”; but who can see it clearly?

“You’re wrong” vs. “This is beautiful, isn’t it?” Why I struggle to explain the gospel

Dad · Feb 24, 2015 ·

Jami and Zach,

I hope that someday you can love people in ways I was never able to.

There are many people I know right now that are dear to me that haven’t surrendered their lives to Jesus. I want them to be able to have a chance to see what I see when it comes to who Jesus is.

What makes it better is that my good friends aren’t idiots: they are smart and they see the real John Miller. Full of his mess. They know I’m not better than anyone. I’m a mess just like the rest of us. However, my mess has a very real answer through the lens of Jesus.

Happy 3rd Birthday Zach

Dad · Feb 21, 2015 ·

Zach,

Three years ago today God gave you to the world and Mom and I get the privilege of calling you our son. Mom woke up this morning and said her two favorite days of the whole year are your birthday and Jami’s.

Not so high. Not so low.

Dad · Feb 9, 2015 ·

One morning, when I was in high school, I was in a rush to catch the bus. On my way out I must have said something harsh to my mom.  Normally I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. [Read more…] about Not so high. Not so low.
